Terry Lowenthal to be honored with the JFS Mensches & Mimosas Award
May 23 at 11am
When Temple Sinai needs something done—and needs it done thoroughly, thoughtfully, correctly, on-time, and in good spirit—we count on Terry Lowenthal. Terry is more than just a dependable volunteer in the congregation; she is part of the foundation on which Temple Sinai stands. Terry has filled many rolls at Temple Sinai. I first met her when we were serving as Monthly Coordinators for the spring sabbatical of our Rabbis, Rabbi Jonathan Rubenstein and Rabbi Linda Motzkin. Terry proved to be an expert at organizing and coordinating—schedules and people! The Monthly Coordinators group transformed into our Avodah Committee, Temple Sinai’s version of a ritual committee. There Terry single handedly took on the overwhelming task of coordinating our Onegs for Erev Shabbat and Shabbat morning services. This involved assigning congregants dates and negotiating changes in schedules, assuring the building was open early so the Oneg could be set up, and making lots of reminder phone calls, to say nothing about last minute emergency shopping. I think the only ray of sunshine that Terry finds in the current pandemic is that it relieves us of arranging Onegs, but she, along with others, misses the schmoozing! Terry has also served many terms on the Temple Sinai Board of Trustees, where we have come to count on her to ask pointed and probing questions about finances. She is currently completing her term as Secretary to the Board, where in addition to taking minutes and various correspondences, she also helps oversee our annual congregational meetings. Most recently, though, Terry performed outstandingly as the chair of the Nominating Committee for the Board. Terry brought together a wonderful committee who represented the various constituencies of the congregation, solicited nominations, and put together a slate of new Board members and officers that reflects the diversity of Temple Sinai. Most importantly, Terry came to recognize the importance of putting together a Board that will not only address today’s issues but also be ready to take on leadership roles in the future. On Sundays, she is among the voracious readers who make up our Temple Book Club. Terry is also a regular part of our Shabbat minyans and has risen to chant Torah not only at our services at Temple Sinai and on Zoom, but also for our Shabbat morning service at Wesley Nursing Home. Wherever one may find Temple Sinai, it is likely that Terry will be there, too, as a congregant, participant, and organizer.
